CATHARSIS
FOUNDATION OBRAS 2022
Medium: Video (15:54), Photography, Painting and Blue-Ink Drawings
Concept:
During my four-week residency at Obras Foundation in Portugal, I engaged in a reflective exploration of grief, healing, and the lingering effects of the pandemic. This body of work, titled Catharsis, invites viewers into a meditative space where silence and contemplation coexist, offering a journey toward emotional release.
Description:
In this series, I find myself in evocative and often unexpected landscapes—sitting or lying in places that evoke both tranquility and solitude, from the serene corners of the residence to the striking beauty of a marble quarry. Each setting serves as a backdrop for introspection, capturing fleeting moments of stillness amidst the chaos of life.
Catharsis creates a dialogue between the human experience and the natural world, emphasizing the beauty found in quiet reflection. These scenes encourage viewers to consider their own relationship with silence and the significance of finding peace in moments of solitude. To enrich this sensory experience, I collaborated with Berlin-based musician Sophie Tassignon, who was also a resident at the foundation. With her permission, I incorporated an existing piece from her music library into the video’s score, complementing the visuals with haunting melodies that enhance the emotional landscape of the work.

Themes:
Grief and Healing: An exploration of how we navigate personal and collective loss, encouraging dialogue around the complexities of human emotion.
Meditation and Silence: Highlighting the transformative power of stillness, where reflection can lead to clarity and understanding.
Connection to Nature: Examining how the natural environment serves as a canvas for our thoughts, offering a space for renewal and introspection.
