正月 Shōgatsu

Shogatsu, the Japanese New Year, marks the beginning of a fresh year filled with hope and renewal. My Japanese friend, Asako, introduced me to the concept of Shogatsu, which inspired my series of acrylic paintings (and later, limited edition phone cases) created in 2017. The first piece was started on the very first day of the year, drawing from the rich traditions surrounding this celebration, particularly the significance of how we spend that first day.

As an artist, I focus on capturing personal experiences and emotions through my use of bold colours. These vibrant hues create a sense of intensity and engagement, inviting viewers to connect deeply with the work. The abstract pieces convey intense moments that encourage reflection and exploration. By intentionally avoiding recognisable forms, I create a space where interpretation is open and personal.

Through this series, I aim to express the spirit of Shogatsu and the themes of celebration and reflection. My paintings are an invitation to connect with your own journey and embrace new beginnings. Each brushstroke reflects my interest in exploring identity and personal growth, encouraging a genuine dialogue between the artwork and the viewer.
